  • PercUp! Percussion Festival – May 10, 2014

    Justin Mabry, Adjunct Percussion Instructor at Mars Hill University was a featured clinician at PercUp! Percussion Festival at Riverside High School in Greer, SC on Saturday, May 10th 2014. Students from state-wide band programs were in attendance. Mr. Mabry presented a master class on “Developing Proficiency in Snare Drumming.” Other clinicians for the event were Dr. Brian Tinkel, Director of Percussion Studies at Mars Hill University. The master class focused on concert and rudimental styles in snare drum playing. Emphasis was placed on sound production, musicality and expression, and stylistic differences.

  • 10-can percussion at NC PAS Day of Percussion

    10-can percussion was a featured ensemble at the North Carolina PAS Day of Percussion at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill on Saturday, March 8th 2014. 10-can percussion (Corey Denham, Emory Hensley, Justin Mabry, Dr. Brian Tinkel) performed What Hath II by Kate Neal and 39 - a manicheus álma / beFORe JOHN3 by Holló Aurél.   • North Carolina PAS Day of Percussion – March 8, 2014

    Justin Mabry, Percussion Instructor at Mars Hill University was a featured clinician for the North Carolina PAS Day of Percussion at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill on Saturday, March 8th 2014. Educators from North Carolina programs were in attendance including students from state-wide band programs. Mr. Mabry presented a master class on “Developing Proficiency in Snare Drumming.” Other clinicians for the event included Dr. Brian Tinkel, Director of Percussion Studies at Mars Hill University.   • Graduate Recital Recap

    Thank you to everyone who made it to my recital this past Sunday. It went very well and I am thankful to have the wonderful family and friends that I do!   • Coastal Surge Drum & Bugle Corps

    I am honored to announce that I have joined the design team of Coastal Surge Drum & Bugle Corps as percussion arranger for the 2013 season. 

    About Coastal Surge: 

    Excellence through great instruction is our focus and we strive to meet performance objectives as well as provide an unforgettable educational experience for all of our members. Our educational team includes a careful balance and blend of musical and performing arts educators that have experience from within the Drum Corps, Winter Guard and Percussion activities. As a member of the Coastal Surge Performing Arts Association, you can expect the highest quality instruction and a show that will be both challenging and exciting to perform. During your experience as a member of one of our performing ensembles, you will be asked to challenge and push yourselves in all aspects of personal and ensemble performance. We have established a highly qualified team of educators and designers to help lead you through the process of creating, learning and perfecting a show. When you finish the season and reflect back to where you began, you will notice that you have become a much stronger musician, marcher, and most importantly you will be a much better performer. Through it all, you will have become a more confident and self-motivated individual all while thrilling audiences throughout the United States with your performances.   • Wake Forest Independent 2013

    Wake Forest Independent had an excellent start to the season with their Open House camp on September 30, 2012 at Wake Forest University. The informational camp provided prospective members a chance to experience WFI and get a leg up on the formal unit auditions.

    The first audition camp is on October 14th and will be held at Ronald W. Reagan High School.

    The fee for the camp is $25, and students are encouraged to bring their own instrument to perform on.

  • A Success! Carolina Gold Summer Percussion Clinic Writeup!

    The 2012 Carolina Gold Percussion Summer Clinic was a great success! Carolina Gold hosted its third annual Summer Percussion Clinic on Saturday, July 21st from 9am - 6:30pm. Carolina Gold percussion caption head Justin Mabry and the 2012 percussion staff (Corey Denham, Jonathan Pratt, Emory Hensley, Justin Belcher, Nanako Tsurumi, Ron Forsh, and Sean Combes) provided the clinic to participants, working in both group and one-on-one settings, to help build the necessary skills to enhance their playing, all in a fun and productive environment. Curriculum for the clinic included grips, sound production, stroke guidelines, dynamic control, and proper practice. Dr. Kristopher Keeton provided an excellent master class titled “Power Transfer.” This class applied marching percussion skills to drum set and other percussion instruments. The clinic concluded with a performance from the 2012 Carolina Gold Percussion Program.   • Carolina Gold Summer Percussion Clinic


    Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps will be hosting its THIRD ANNUAL Summer Percussion Clinic on Saturday, July 21st from 9am - 6:30pm. Justin Mabry and the 2012 Carolina Gold Percussion Staff will be providing the clinic to anyone who is interested. All of the clinicians that will be teaching at the clinic are education professionals that will work with the students in both group and one-on-one settings to help them build the necessary skills to enhance their playing, all in a fun and productive environment. There will also be a master class provided by Dr. Kristopher Keeton as well as a performance from the 2012 Carolina Gold Percussion Section. The cost is only $50 and included in this price will be the Clinic Exercise Packet (which will be used throughout the clinic), Innovative Percussion Marching Snare Sticks, 2012 Clinic Shirt, Lunch, and door prizes throughout the master class from our sponsors. 

    The curriculum for the clinic will teach the students all the fundamentals of their particular instruments, helping them grow to a more intermediate, if not advanced level. The students will be given the information they need to take these basic techniques and enhance them which will enable them to become the best performers possible.
